It is language that can describe or argue about complicated issues to help readers understand and\/or become convinced about some proposal. It can be general for the educated public <strong>(English for General Academic Purposes: EGAP)<\/strong> or specific to researchers in a particular field of academic inquiry (English for Specific Academic Purposes: ESAP).<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-american-psychological-association-apa-format\">American Psychological Association (APA) Format<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The APA format is one of the most widely used set of guidelines for academic citation and referencing.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-audience\">Audience<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The intended readers for a piece of writing.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-background-information\">Background Information<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>One or more sentences that connect a <strong>hook<\/strong> and a <strong>thesis statement<\/strong> in an <strong>Introduction<\/strong>. These statements usually explain the general background of the topic indicated in the hook, add some details to it, define <strong>keywords<\/strong> if necessary, and lead readers to the thesis statement that follows. In other words, it narrows down the wide scope that the hook covers into a focused point of the thesis statement.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-bias\">Bias<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A preference or inclination that prevents someone from looking at an issue objectively.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-biodegradable\">biodegradable<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-biodegrade\">biodegrade<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>to decompose and be absorbed by the environment<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-body\">Body<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The second part of a passage that supports the idea presented in the first part <strong>(Introduction)<\/strong>. Body paragraphs usually include reasons, examples, data or other types of information that strengthen the idea presented in the Introduction (the <strong>controlling idea<\/strong>). The content of the body paragraphs should be 'controlled' by the controlling idea in the <strong>topic sentence<\/strong> for paragraph <strong>unity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-brainstorming\">Brainstorming<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A prewriting stage when the writer creatively formulates ideas about a topic.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-coherence\">Coherence<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A sense that readers get when they read a well-connected passage. Coherence is often achieved by the effective use of <strong>transitional words\/phrases.<\/strong> When a passage is coherent, it clearly shows the point that it describes or argues and increases the sense of <strong>unity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The last of the essential three parts of an essay. It restates the topic presented in the<strong> Introduction<\/strong>, summarizes supporting points and details in the <strong>Body<\/strong>, and makes a final statement (a comment or implications) to make a lasting impression at the end of a passage.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-confluence\">confluence<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>an act or process of merging<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-controlling-idea\">Controlling Idea<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Located in the topic sentence of <strong>Body<\/strong> paragraphs. It specifies the particular aspect(s) of the topic that the paragraph will describe or explain.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-cutlery\">cutlery<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>knives, forks, spoons; used for eating food<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-definition\">Definition<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A passage that enables readers to understand the meaning of a term and to distinguish it from other similar or related terms.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-disruption\">disruption<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>separation or division<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-draft\">Draft<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A preliminary version of a piece of writing that is intended to be revised to improve organization, content\/ideas, and expression\/style.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-efficacy\">efficacy<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>the ability to produce expected results<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-english-for-general-academic-purposes-egap\">English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP)<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A type of <strong>academic English<\/strong> is used to communicate complicated matters in a straightforward way across disciplines and fields. As a general rule, a paragraph should include just one main idea. In academic writing, a paragraph is normally described as having three parts: a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-paraphrase\">Paraphrase<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Text that expresses similar ideas found in another text (source), but uses different words and structure.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-peer-review\">Peer Review<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>The method of getting feedback on an essay from a classmate or colleague to improve the quality of the ideas and the organization. It usually comes after the hook and general statements.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-to-compel\">to compel<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>to force or pressure to do something<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-topic-sentence\">Topic Sentence<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A sentence usually located at the beginning of a <strong>Body<\/strong> paragraph. It indicates the topic of the <strong>paragraph<\/strong> and the main idea about the topic that the paragraph will develop. Thus, it shows what the writer will focus on (see <strong>Controlling Idea<\/strong>) and establishes <strong>unity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-transitional-wordsphrases\">Transitional Words\/Phrases<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>Words and phrases that help readers follow how a passage develops. Specifically, they help readers to understand how a passage is organized and how different parts of a passage are connected. In other words, these words improve <strong>coherence<\/strong>. Examples of these expressions include <em>first, furthermore, lastly, however, on the other hand, <\/em>or<em> to sum up.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt data-type=\"glossterm\"><dfn id=\"dfn-unity\">Unity<\/dfn><\/dt>\n<dd data-type=\"glossdef\">\n<p>A sense that readers get when they read a passage where only one theme is developed with no irrelevant or unnecessary information added.
